When it is too hot to exercise outside for months at a time, a small workout corner at home helps you stay consistent. You do not need a spare room. A two-metre square of floor and a few compact items are enough for a full-body routine.
Start with the space
- Pick a spot near a window or AC vent with room to lie down and stretch your arms.
- Use an exercise mat to protect tiles and reduce noise for neighbours below.
- Store small items in one box or basket so the corner is quick to set up and clear away.
Strength without heavy weights
- A doorway pull-up bar for pull-ups, hanging knee raises and assisted rows.
- A foldable push-up board to vary grip positions for chest, shoulders and triceps.
- Suspension training straps that anchor to a door for rows, squats and lunges using your bodyweight.
- A pair of hexagonal dumbbells that will not roll across the floor.
Core training
An ab roller is small but effective; start on your knees with short rolls. A sit-up assistant bar holds your feet in place on any floor.
Cardio in a small space
If you have a little more room, a folding walking treadmill slides under a bed or sofa. A mini pedal exerciser works under a desk for light, low-impact movement.
A simple weekly plan
- Three days a week: 20 to 30 minutes of strength and core, resting a day in between.
- Two days a week: brisk walking or cycling indoors.
- Every day: five minutes of stretching.
If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
