Many UAE residents move when a tenancy contract ends, often with only a few weeks' notice. Good packing materials and a plan save time, money and broken plates. Here is the checklist we would use ourselves.
Three to four weeks before
- Book your movers or van early, especially at month end when demand peaks.
- Go room by room and give away or sell what you no longer use.
- Estimate how many boxes you need: roughly 10 to 15 per bedroom, plus extra for the kitchen.
Choose the right boxes
Use smaller, stronger boxes for heavy things and larger boxes for light, bulky things. That keeps every box liftable.
- Books, tins and tools: a small 35 x 35 x 35 cm box or 45 x 32 x 23 cm box.
- Kitchenware and general items: a 50 x 35 x 32 cm box.
- Bedding, cushions and clothes: a tall 5-ply 45 x 45 x 68 cm box.
- Long or awkward items: a 90 x 47 x 31 cm box.
Protect fragile items
Wrap glasses, plates and electronics individually and fill empty space so nothing moves when the box is shaken. A 75 cm x 30 m bubble wrap roll covers a typical apartment kitchen; for TVs, mirrors and artwork the wider 150 cm roll is easier.
Seal and label properly
Tape the bottom of each box with an H pattern using heavy-duty packing tape. Write the room and a short list of contents on two sides with a marker, or on masking tape, and mark fragile boxes clearly.
Moving furniture without scratching floors
Tiled and marble floors are common in UAE homes and scratch easily. A furniture lifter and sliders kit lets one person shift a sofa or wardrobe safely.
Moving day
- Keep an essentials box with chargers, documents, medicines, kettle, cups and toilet roll.
- Take photos of meter readings and the empty flat for your deposit.
- Check building rules: many towers require a move permit and set lift hours.
